Past ICS student Lily James visited our Stage 5 Textiles Technology class last week, sharing some of her journey in fashion design.
Having completed Year 12 in 2014, Lily has now graduated from a three year course in Fashion Design at Raffles College of Design and Commerce.
Her final year saw her design and create her own collection, culminating in a runway show. Her work was selected to be part of a Student Fashion exhibition and is currently on display at the Powerhouse Museum.
Lily was inspired by the combination of her Sudanese culture and life in Australia to create her designs. She has become more confident in finding her own voice through her design work, both as a Sudanese young woman and as a Christian.
Lily shared the sketches, research, digital design and experimentation that led to her final garments. She drafted her own patterns, designed her own digitally-printed fabric and constructed each piece. Lily gave an honest account of the joys and challenges that come with being a student linked to such a vibrant and competitive industry.
