Illawarra Christian School congratulates ex-student Emily Edwards (ICS ’17) on her inclusion in the prestigious Young Writers Showcase 2017 anthology!
Recently launched at the NSW State Library, the Young Writers Showcase is a collection of excellent compositions from HSC Major Work projects, published every year by the NSW Education Standards Authority.
Emily Edwards’ Extension 2 short story was selected for inclusion in this year’s anthology. Extension 2 English requires students to submit a highly crafted piece of writing in a form selected from a diverse range of options. Emily chose to write a short story that considers the subjective and abstract nature of the concept of home, and to analyse the connections between place and identity.
Mr Tom Alegounarias, Chairperson of the NESA Board, said the students deserve to be extremely proud to see their work in print: “These 17 young writers have been selected from the more than 1600 students who studied HSC English Extension 2 in 2017 and to be included in this anthology is testament to their extraordinary writing skills. The creativity, maturity and literary excellence demonstrated by them is quite remarkable and no doubt will be well regarded by future employers in whatever field they pursue.”
Cathy Wade, our Director of Teaching and Learning, said of Emily, “Working with our Extension 2 students is always a delightful experience—it was a privilege to be Emily‘s teacher for this subject and to support her through the process of writing.” Mrs Wade and Mrs Jenny Ellis (Head Teacher–English) were at the State Library on the launch night to support and congratulate Emily and her family. We look forward to tracking Emily’s literary progress in the years ahead!
