From 31st July to 10th August, 11 boys from Kosei Junior High School in Tokyo (accompanied by their teachers) came to join us at Illawarra Christian School and experience something of life in an Australian family and school.
In their time with us, the boys participated in regular school and home life, attending classes during the day and spending time with their host families when not at school. The boys had varying levels of English, but everyone was able to make themselves understood! Families were able to take their students on occasional day trips over the time they spent here, giving them a taste of Australian culture.
Here’s what three of our host families had to say about their experience being part of the exchange program:
Haruto was a fantastic addition to our family. He was engaged, funny and enjoyed everything about the experience. He desperately wants to return next year but we hope to catch up with him and his family in Tokyo in Sept/Oct. Highly recommend this for any family! – Brown family
We had a wonderful time with our student, who blended well with our family and did all the chores that my son does. His English was excellent and did very well communicating with us. He loved trying our foods and especially enjoyed our pets. His parting words? “I want to come back next year”! – Banfield family
We had a great experience with our Japanese students. It wasn’t always easy as we had to change our usual bedrooms around, but it was a good opportunity to show hospitality as we’re told to do in the Bible. Our own kids said it was fun and the students were happy to join in with our activities – they seemed to really like board games – they caught on quickly and were always ready to play. At the end of their trip when I asked them what their favourite activity had been, one of them thought for a while and then said ‘all of them’! – Turk family
At the end of their time at ICS, the students and their hosts and buddies at school celebrated together with a classic Australian lunch of meat pies!
Thank you to all our host families for their efforts in making the boys feel at home and giving them a taste of Australian life. We trust the experience was as enjoyable for you as it was for the exchange students themselves! Thanks also to our Year 8 buddies, who worked hard during the time the boys were here to help them out day-to-day as they navigated school life.
It’s not too early to indicate interest in hosting a student for our 2019 exchange. If hosting is something your family might be interested in, get in touch with Mrs Brown, our Director of Student Learning Opportunities, for more information.
