At Illawarra Christian School, we offer a broad range of physical activities and sports which cater for the different needs and strengths of individual students.
Sport helps to promote an active and balanced lifestyle. It develops resilience and perseverance in students, and also teamwork and leadership skills. In sport at Illawarra Christian School, we encourage genuine effort and enthusiastic participation. We consider sportsmanship, respect for others and fair play to be essential aspects in competition as students honour God by striving to do their best.
Our infants students enjoy weekly sport with a focus on the development of coordination and gross and fine motor skills. They participate in an intensive Learn to Swim program in Term 4 each year.
Primary students also have a weekly sport program. They engage with school-based activities in Term 1 and participate in local PSSA competitions during Terms 2 and 3. Year 6 students enjoy surf and beach activities in Term 4. External providers conduct programs for swimming, tennis and gymnastics.
Students in primary and secondary school compete in swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals. These events provide them with opportunities to represent the school at zone, CSSA state, CIS state and All School state levels.
Secondary students also take part in gala days for a wide range of sports: futsal, basketball, netball, soccer, touch football, cricket, volleyball, dragon boat racing, hockey, biathlon, triathlon and tennis. In some of these sports, students are eligible for selection to compete at national level. The needs of all students are catered for in the Illawarra Christian School sports program, with less competitive secondary students having the option to do fitness activities such as skipping, aerobics, strength circuits and Pilates. In summer students participate in the Royal Life Saving Australia program at various levels, including the Bronze Medallion.
From 2018 students in both Years 7 and 8 will enjoy interschool sport. Students in Years 7-10 will take part in a range of sport electives, to be chosen each term, including tennis, aerobics, swimming, cricket, surfing and soccer.
All compulsory sport is conducted during school hours. Optional after-school training is available for students wishing to improve athletics skills or prepare for particular sport events.
