All parents have expectations in relation to their children, whether it be regarding behaviour, academic progress, sporting achievement or future career. Most of us want our children to be good at school, popular with their peers, and successful at their chosen career. The desire of my heart, and I hope for all Christian parents, is that no matter how well they do at school or how popular they are with their friends, I pray that my children walk with the Lord, that they live upright and godly lives – lived to the glory of God.
Part of our task as parents is to train and nurture them in the way in which we want them to go on in life. We prioritise swimming lessons, ballet and soccer practise, homework and extra tuition but where do we place instruction in God’s word, in prayer and shaping and moulding character? In sending your children to Illawarrra Christian School you have selected a school that seeks to work in partnership with parents and takes seriously the responsibility of parents to nurture, educate and train their children in the ways of the Lord. Our desire is to reinforce the biblical principles and instruction you teach and model to your children at home. We need to prioritise the things of God in our homes – in the everyday tasks and responsibilities and through deliberate instruction in God’s word, in meeting with fellow believers and in sharing our faith.
Parenting is a very daunting and sometimes overwhelming task with much responsibility. It is also a wonderful privilege though to help shape and disciple young lives. Parents, let us give thanks for the task God has given us and take seriously the responsibility that comes with it.
