In our modern society many things will influence your child—social media, their peers, teachers and parents, to name just a few. A child’s parents and their teachers are two of the most significant influences in a child’s life and development.
The average Australian student will spend over a thousand hours each year at school. With students being sent to prep or preschool many children will spend between 12–15 years in educational institutions between the ages of 3 and 18. These are some of the most influential and formative years of our lives. Do you know who and what is really influencing and shaping your children?
Your child’s teachers will have a significant influence. Teachers are significant role models. Your child will imitate their teachers. As parents it is important we help ensure our children have suitable role models.
In 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul urges his readers to imitate him as he seeks to imitate Christ. In selecting a school parents are choosing who they will partner with for the education of their child and who they want to be role models for their children.
Education is more than gaining knowledge about the world around us. It is learning how to respond to and live out that knowledge. Different teachers do have very different understandings of what is important in life. Choosing a school which employs practising Christians as teachers gives parents a greater say in who will be a role model for their children and the worldview that is taught and demonstrated in the classroom. Christian teachers are not perfect. Nor do they have all the answers. Yet they have, at the core, a biblical foundation and worldview that underpins their teaching practice.
At Illawarra Christian School all our staff are committed Christians who love the Lord Jesus. This is absolutely foundational to who we are as a school. It is our desire for parents and teachers to work together to positively influence children. Our goal as a Christian school is to help parents train the next generation to understand the real world as God designed it. Our hope is that children will discover their place in God’s great story, learn how to serve others and be better prepared for life.
