Tom David reports on Junior and Senior ICS Hockey at the CCS Gala Day on 20 February 2018.
The junior team was made up of some players with hockey experience and others with very little experience of hockey. Under the coaching of former student Ryan M, this team was brought together and had some real highlights on the day. Some highlights included Ayele’s first ever hockey goal and the effort from Katelyn in defence. The team fought hard all day, were unlucky not to get a win but were very close on multiple occasions.
The senior team, coached by Mr Russell, were dominant all day. The team was full of enthusiastic and experienced players who all worked well together to allow the team to remain undefeated at the end of the round stage. The seniors made it to the semi-final where their opponents, Covenant Christian School, were waiting. We started off a bit timid and were soon 1-1. After an inspirational speech by Coach Russell, we soon found our groove and started scoring goals again. We ended up winning 8-1 and found ourselves again in the grand-final for a second year in a row.
To finish the day, the senior team had to face off against Inaburra Christian School who were also undefeated all day. Both teams started strong and shot from all over the pitch. Solid defensive work and quick counter attacks had us up 2-1 at half time. Part-way through the second half we were struck by injury. Our defensive capabilities were crippled and we soon found ourselves with a hole in the back line. It wasn’t long till Inaburra took full opportunity and had us 3-2 down. A late surge from our attack saw the game end at 4-3 to Inaburra. We had fought hard but were unable to go back-to-back state champions.
All players in both teams fought hard and played to the best of their abilities. They all showcased the incredible hockey talent the school has to offer. It was really encouraging to see the seniors supporting the juniors as they played and the juniors becoming a strong cheer squad for the senior team as they made their push for the state title.
The day was topped off by Ella G and Thomas D both being selected to represent the school in the CSSA Opens School Girls and Boys Teams respectively.
