Illawarra Christian School employs a full-time school psychologist who provides a range of direct and indirect services to the school community.
School psychologists are registered psychologists who are bound by the ethics of their registration body and the Australian Psychological Society. At Illawarra Christian School, the school psychologist’s role includes:
- individual and group counselling of students
- psycho-educational student assessments and report writing
- consultancy regarding psychological service to schools and communities
- liaison with welfare agencies or medical specialists
- response and support for critical incident management
- student advocacy
- assistance with the development of whole-school policies and practices (e.g. anti-bullying practices, encouraging proactive student behaviours)
- teacher training and development activities.
Illawarra Christian School also employs a school counsellor who provides additional counselling support for students.
Alyson Officer – School Psychologist
BSc (Psych), Grad Dip Child Psych, MAPS
Alyson has been a registered psychologist for nearly 20 years. She is a clinical supervisor who regularly supervises university students who are completing registration. Prior to joining Illawarra Christian School, Alyson worked in a number of government and non-government agencies and schools, always with children and their families.
Alyson’s three boys attend lllawarra Christian School, and the family worships at Dapto Anglican Church. She loves meeting with her Bible study group and enjoys serving with the church’s pastoral care team.
Alyson is humbled by the experience of walking alongside young people. She believes that God has given us strengths that help us to manage in difficult times and that we often just need assistance in working through these. Alyson is passionate about young people, understanding that mental and spiritual health is as important as physical health, and that those who are able to develop a skill in this area go on to be our most resilient learners.
Anna Dombkins – School Counsellor
BSc (Psych), Grad Dip Psych
Anna is a former Illawarra Christian School student who first joined the staff team in 2006 as a school counsellor. She returned to this role in 2014 following a number of years working in Tanzania. She has worked in schools as a child and adolescent counsellor, in correctional centres and at Anglicare Counselling.
Anna is married to Mark, and they have six children. The family attends Figtree Anglican Church where they enjoy supporting youth group leaders as ‘year parents’. Anna and Mark are founders and directors of Forever Projects, a charity they have established with the aim of providing nutrition, empowerment and independence to lift Tanzanian families out of extreme poverty.
Anna enjoys providing support, guidance and counselling to students and families at Illawarra Christian School. She considers it an honour and a joy to see God at work in our community.
