Music learning assists students to reach their learning capacity earlier, helps students to hear the emotional meaning in speech, assists with inhibitory control, supports children with focus and attention, and helps students to unscramble the messages in text or code.
We have specialist music teachers working with students from Prep to Year 12, as well as dedicated music classrooms and instrumental tutorial rooms for individual or small group instruction and practice. Students have many opportunities to perform on a regular basis at School and special events, and to participate in music tours.
Beginning in 2021, our Year 3 students will pioneer our innovative music and literacy program.
Our Hear it, Speak it, Read it! program sees all our Year 3 students learn a stringed instrument with expert tutors as part of their regular classroom learning. Students will have small group lessons each week, have the opportunity to join a small group ensemble and will have time each day to practise their instrument at school. Instruments and tuition will be provided for all students free of charge.
We are excited about rolling out this program across our Junior School over the next few years. It is based on the highly regarded work of Australian music educator Dr Anita Collins and her research on the impact of music education on literacy, numeracy and emotional regulation.
The following co-curricular musical options are available to students:
Our peripatetic music program gives students the opportunity to undertake their musical instrument tuition under tutors who visit the school during the school week.
